Driving Traffic With Little To No Budget
The purpose of online marketing is to land conversions and long-lasting customers. However, sales don’t happen until your product has gained the attention of your target audience, and that target audience has generated traffic to your website.
It may sound simple, but standing out in a saturated online marketplace can be anything but! One market research firm estimated that the average person sees or hears over 4,000 ads per day. That’s a lot of competition.
When you’re competing for attention, you aren’t just going up against other small businesses; your competition includes big brands with even bigger advertising budgets who have the means to climb their way to the top of the search engines. More often than not, their large budget directly results in more traffic.
Luckily, you can level the playing field by learning how to drive online traffic with a $0 budget using SEO.
Just enter your name and email below to access a free SEO strategy download that will give you all the steps you need to build a successful SEO campaign.
How Good SEO Drives Free Traffic
As a business owner, certain searches indicate that a potential customer needs your services or product. By optimizing your site, you are working to ensure that it comes up first before any of your competitors.
These searches happen constantly. Google alone receives over 60,000 searches per second every day, with the average person contributing around four searches per day.
You can see how traffic can add up for almost any industry or niche.
The good news is that Google wants to send you this traffic for FREE, provided that you implement effective SEO strategies on your website.
The Nine Stages of Good SEO
Here’s a comprehensive SEO strategy broken into nine stages:
- Brand Recognition
- Keyword Research
- Competitor Analysis
- Content Creation and Optimization
- Technical SEO
- User Experience
- Natural Backlinking
- Conversion Rate Optimization
Going through each of these steps will do a lot to boost your rankings and provide tangible results in your business.
It’s unlikely that your website is the only online property that features your brand. Most businesses have social media profiles and even other listings that show up on Google, such as a Google My Business account.
If you have these properties up and running, you need to ensure that your business name and contact information are accurate and consistent across all sites.
If you don’t have these properties set up, that’s step one. Create your Google My Business account and start creating profiles on different social media sites.
Having the right keywords in place sets the foundation for a successful SEO campaign.
Also, performing diligent keyword research is the best way to discover which keywords will drive the best (and most) traffic to your website.
Brainstorm the “obvious” keywords related to your business and use them as a starting point. Then, use an online keyword tool like the Google AdWords Keyword Planner to generate more ideas. Keep digging, and you’ll find some unexpected terms that can drive loads of free traffic to your site.
No matter what keywords you pick, you will run into websites that are already ranking for those terms. This is your competition.
Competition isn’t necessarily a bad sign. It means the keywords you’ve selected are driving quality organic traffic to other sites. With a bit of work, you can boost your rankings and point this traffic toward your page instead.
So, don’t fear your competition. Instead, analyze what they’re doing and see what you can emulate and improve upon.
Various tools can assist with analyzing your competitors, but to start, visit their sites and check out their content. Use the information you find to help you with the next step in the process.
High-quality content is king when it comes to ranking in search results.
Back when search engines were new, it was easy to game the system and rank on the top of page one with minimal effort. This was bad news for search engines since it provided an abysmal user experience. Over time, the algorithms that power search engines have become much more sophisticated.
As a result, keyword stuffing and other cheap tactics will do more to hurt your rankings than help them.
The smarter strategy is to create high-quality content consistently.
Keyword research and your competitor analysis will give you an excellent starting point for coming up with content ideas.
From there, focus on providing valuable information to your readers with long-form content. It would be best if you write at least one keyword-driven blog post a week of at least 2,000 words or more, but preferably two.
Then take that content, share it across the web and ask for feedback.
Pay extra attention to the titles of your articles as that’s what will drive readers to make that initial click.
Technical SEO involves optimizing the infrastructure of your website.
Technical SEO includes:
- URL Redirects
- Robots.txt files
- 404 Errors
- And more…
These technical details can seem confusing at first glance, but several SEO auditing tools can scan your site and generate a report showing you exactly what to fix.
Tackling the technical SEO on your website is the best place to start when executing a new SEO strategy on existing content. While keyword research and content creation are necessary, the structure of your site must be set up correctly to show up in search results at all.
Improving user experience means making it easy for someone to navigate your site.
These days, Google puts a big emphasis on providing a good user experience for searches done from a mobile device.
Your site may look great on a desktop, but what about on an iPhone? A tablet? You’ll want to test pages out on multiple devices to make sure the overall user experience is a good one.
Poor mobile optimization could be what’s holding you back from appearing higher in search results.
You (or any SEO consultant that you work with) should be able to provide a definitive report on how well an SEO campaign is working. This feedback should be backed up by real data collected through tracking tools.
Accurate tracking will let you see what’s working and what isn’t in your SEO strategy, taking the guesswork out of making further improvements to your site moving forward.
For example, you may think a particular keyword is driving the bulk of your traffic only to find that the data proves you should create more content for an entirely different term.
Backlinks are when third-party sites share a link back to your content. Natural backlinks are ones that happen organically, meaning you haven’t sponsored or paid for it.
Getting natural backlinks goes hand-in-hand with creating quality content, but that doesn’t mean you can’t (or shouldn’t) be proactive about getting links. Share the content you make on different sites and social media platforms and encourage others to share it as well.
In addition to writing posts for your website or blog, try finding opportunities for guest posting on other pages. Just be sure to include a link back to your site in any guest posts you write.
Conversion Rate Optimization
Ranking high in search results shouldn’t be a vanity metric.
Yes, you can drive free traffic with SEO, but your ultimate goal is to convert that traffic into sales. That’s where conversion rate optimization (CRO) comes in.
SEO is about getting people to your site, while CRO is about getting them to take the next step in the sales process. That could involve someone filling out a form, dialing a phone number, or making a purchase.
Learning a little about CRO can go a long way towards maximizing the results generated from organic traffic.
Going Beyond Google
Most online searches happen on Google. But not all of them.
Taking the time to optimize your site for other search engines like Yahoo and Bing will increase the total amount of organic traffic generated. It will also provide a backup if Google changes their algorithm in a way that negatively affects your ranking.
Plus, search engines appeal to certain demographics. It may be the case that your ideal audience doesn’t use Google as much as you think.
Implementing the Steps and Driving Free Traffic
You can rank highly on Google and other search engines without having to pay a dime.
However, that doesn’t mean there won’t be a lot of work involved. SEO levels the playing field and allows small businesses to compete with big brands, but it can take a while before you see results from your SEO campaign.
Review all the steps on this page and in the free SEO strategy download, and take time to implement them every day.
Because the traffic you get from SEO is free, it won’t take much to generate an ROI from your efforts.
However, one thing to consider is your return on time. As a business owner, it may not be worthwhile for you to execute all the steps in an SEO campaign yourself. If that is the case, consider delegating tasks to your staff or working with a consultant who provides affordable SEO services.
Either way, you’ll still be able to improve your rankings and increase conversions without needing a marketing budget for ads.
